Characterization of the serum proteome is critical for identifying disease biiomarkers; however, the dynamic concentration range of proteins in serum presents a challenging analytical situation. While several fractionation strategies can be used, Tirumalai et al. have shown the low molecular weight serum proteome is comprised of several important protein classes including cytokines, chemokines, peptide hormones, and proteolytic fragments of larger proteins. For details see the article by Tirumalai et al., pages 1096-1103.
