On the cover, plasma membrane proteins play important roles in mediating a cell's interactions with and responses to the surrounding environment. These proteins are normally difficult to analyze because of their low abundance. Using modification-specific proteomics, plasma membrane proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana that are phosphorylated or modified with glycosylphosphatidylinositol were identified. For details, see articles by Nuühse et al., previous issue, pages 1234–1243, and Elortza et al., this issue, pages 1261-1270.
